DUBAI — Dubai Customs has extended the suspension period for customs duties on eligible declarations by an additional 60 days, bringing the total suspension window to 180 days. The move is aimed at easing the financial and administrative pressures many businesses continue to face amid ongoing operational challenges in the trade sector.

Details of the Extension

According to the announcement, the extension applies to customs duty suspension arrangements that were originally set to expire after February 27, 2026, and up to October 31, 2026. This covers a broad range of trade activity, including imports intended for re export, temporary admission, and all categories of transit shipments passing through the emirate.

Importantly, the additional 60 day period does not begin immediately for every affected declaration. Instead, it takes effect from the date on which each individual arrangement’s original suspension period was due to expire. This means businesses with different original deadlines will see their extensions kick in at different points, depending on when their specific suspension window was set to close.

Dubai Customs also left the door open for further adjustments down the line, noting that it may extend the suspension period again in accordance with its approved rules and procedures. The current extension will remain in effect until a new customs announcement is issued to formally terminate it, giving businesses some assurance that the support will not be withdrawn without prior notice.

The new measure officially takes effect from the date of its issuance and applies on a temporary basis to all customs declarations that fall under its provisions.

The Reasoning Behind the Move

In explaining the decision, Dubai Customs said the extension is designed to provide greater support to businesses operating within the emirate’s trade ecosystem, while directly reducing the financial and administrative burdens they face. Beyond easing costs for individual companies, the measure is also intended to help maintain the continuity of supply chains and facilitate the smooth flow of trade at a time when businesses are contending with a range of operational challenges.

By suspending customs duties for a longer stretch of time, companies involved in re export, temporary admission, and transit operations gain more flexibility in managing cash flow and logistics planning. This is particularly valuable for businesses that rely on Dubai’s position as a major regional trade hub, where goods frequently pass through the emirate on their way to other destinations rather than being sold within the local market.

Building on Previous Measures

This latest extension does not exist in isolation. It follows directly from Customs Announcement No. 12 of 2026, issued on June 18, which had previously extended the customs duty suspension period to 120 days. That earlier measure applied to eligible arrangements whose suspension periods were set to expire after February 27 and up to July 31, 2026.

Taken together, the two announcements reflect a pattern of incremental extensions, with Dubai Customs adjusting the suspension window in stages rather than committing to a single long term timeline upfront. This approach allows the authority to respond to evolving trade conditions while still providing businesses with a reasonably clear runway to plan around.

What This Means for Businesses

For companies operating in Dubai’s trade and logistics sectors, the extension offers welcome breathing room. Businesses that had been preparing for customs duties to come due under the original suspension timeline can now factor in additional months before those obligations take effect, provided their declarations fall within the eligible categories.

The continued flexibility is especially relevant for companies engaged in transit trade, a segment that plays a significant role in Dubai’s broader economic strategy as a connector between global markets. By reducing the immediate financial burden tied to customs duties, the emirate is positioning itself to keep goods moving efficiently through its ports and logistics networks, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable hub for international commerce.

Looking Ahead

While Dubai Customs has not indicated whether further extensions beyond October 31, 2026, are likely, its statement leaves room for exactly that possibility. Given the precedent set by the two consecutive extensions issued so far this year, businesses operating under these arrangements may reasonably expect the authority to continue monitoring trade conditions closely and adjusting its policies accordingly.

For now, the message from Dubai Customs is one of continued support, with officials framing the extension as part of a broader effort to help businesses navigate a challenging period while keeping the emirate’s trade infrastructure running smoothly and efficiently.
