5 Leadership Development Tips

The Global Gulf

October 3, 2026

Leading a modern business takes a new type of leadership. Work patterns are shifting, teams are spread across time zones, and the skills that served earlier generations of managers no longer cover everything today’s leaders face. Companies that want to stay strong need to develop leaders with care and purpose. Here are five tips to help.

1. Be Flexible

Flexibility may not be the first quality that comes to mind when thinking about developing new leaders, yet it is becoming a core part of a thriving workplace. The way we work is changing quickly. New leaders no longer manage only those who sit in the same office. More and more of them are learning to lead global teams and departments spread across the world.

A new working environment calls for new leadership. Work-life balance has somewhat given way to work-life harmony, as many people struggle with the crossover between their jobs and their personal lives. Leaders who recognize this and respond with understanding earn loyalty and trust. Flexibility, paired with modern workplace tools, platforms and systems, is vital for leading an organisation today.

In practice, this might mean agreeing on core hours that suit several time zones, recording meetings for those who cannot attend live, and judging people by results instead of hours logged at a desk.

2. Develop Mentoring Programs for Leaders

Consider how a professional athlete or a rising sports star is supported. A coach, a trainer, a nutritionist and other specialists all play a part. Yet organisations often limit the growth of new leaders by overlooking the benefits of a supported approach to mentoring, both inside and outside the company.

A good mentoring program pairs emerging leaders with experienced colleagues who can share lessons, offer honest feedback and open doors. External mentors add a fresh view and expose new leaders to ideas from other industries. Set clear goals for each pairing, schedule regular meetings and ask both sides to review progress every few months. Mentoring also benefits the mentor, who gains new perspectives and sharpens their own skills.

3. Invest in Education

In most cases, the more you can invest in education for new leaders, the better. Some organisations hesitate to fund education programs out of concern that someone may leave and the return on investment will never be fully realised. That worry is understandable, but it overlooks a larger point. A learning program is of real value to people, and you may be surprised at how much it improves many areas of the company.

Education does not have to mean expensive degrees. Workshops, online courses, reading groups, conference attendance and job shadowing all help. The aim is to give new leaders a steady supply of fresh ideas and practical skills. People who feel that their employer invests in them tend to show greater commitment, not less. The greater risk is often failing to invest, and watching talented people leave because they see no path forward.

4. Develop People at All Levels

Many organisations identify future leaders through assessment tools, interviews, external hires, feedback and day-to-day performance. These methods have their place, but it is worth remembering to look for leadership potential throughout the entire company, not only in obvious places.

Some of the best leaders emerge from unexpected corners of the business. A team member who quietly helps colleagues, a junior employee who spots problems early or a specialist who explains complex ideas clearly may all have leadership talent. Build a culture where people feel appreciated and see that they are growing in skills, experience and career. When employees believe their development matters, they bring more energy to their work, and the pool of future leaders grows wider.

Give people chances to lead in small ways, such as running a project, guiding a new hire or presenting to senior staff. These experiences reveal strengths and build confidence long before a formal promotion arrives.

5. Take Your Time

Organisational success takes time, and leaders are difficult to build in a few days or weeks. Identifying and developing new leaders is a gradual process that rewards patience and consistency. Quick fixes rarely produce lasting results.

If you commit to doing what it takes to create new leaders, the benefits spread well beyond the individuals involved. Employee engagement tends to improve at all levels, because people can see that the organisation takes growth seriously. Set realistic milestones, review progress regularly and be ready to adjust the plan as you learn what works. Celebrate small wins along the way, so that people stay motivated through the longer journey.

Putting It All Together

These five tips work best together. Flexibility prepares leaders for a changing world. Mentoring and education provide the support and knowledge they need. Looking for talent at every level widens the pool, and patience gives the process room to succeed.

You do not have to launch everything at once. Choose one or two steps that fit your organisation today, such as starting a small mentoring pilot or setting aside a modest learning budget, and build from there.

Having good leaders at multiple levels improves the whole culture and can positively affect the company’s bottom line. The organisations that invest in leadership now will be better prepared for whatever comes next.
