Riyadh Approves 141,000 Infrastructure Permits Since January 2026

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Infrastructure Projects Center, known as RIPC, has issued more than 141,000 permits since the beginning of 2026, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to regulate project works and strengthen compliance with approved standards and requirements.

A Snapshot of August Activity

The figures come from the center’s periodic report on the performance of service entities covering the month of August. During that single month alone, RIPC issued more than 19,000 infrastructure work permits, a substantial volume that reflects the scale and pace of development taking place across the Riyadh region. Of these, 10,100 were active permits tied to projects currently under execution, giving a clear picture of just how much construction and infrastructure work is happening simultaneously across the city.

The scope of this activity becomes even clearer when looking at its physical footprint. Infrastructure projects during this period affected 1,133 kilometers of roads, a figure that underscores the sheer scale of ongoing development and improvements being made to the region’s road network and related services. For a city undergoing rapid growth and modernization, this level of road work speaks to the breadth of upgrades happening simultaneously across different districts and corridors.

A Surge in Reports

Alongside permit issuance, RIPC also tracks reports submitted regarding infrastructure conditions across the city, and August proved to be another active month on this front. The center received more than 8,000 reports during the month, with road subsidence emerging as the most commonly reported issue, accounting for 29 percent of all submissions. Water accumulation followed closely behind at 26 percent, while uncovered manholes made up 11 percent of the reports received. The remaining 34 percent covered a range of other issue types, reflecting the wide variety of concerns that residents and monitoring teams raise as the city’s infrastructure continues to expand and evolve.

When totaled across the year so far, the number of reports received by the center since the start of 2026 has now surpassed 190,000, a figure that highlights both the scale of monitoring activity taking place and the level of public and institutional engagement with infrastructure oversight in Riyadh.

Compliance Challenges at Project Sites

Beyond tracking permits and reports, RIPC’s field teams have also been actively inspecting project sites throughout the city, and their findings point to several recurring compliance issues. Among the most notable problems identified were inadequate site cleanliness, a lack of proper warning lights and temporary barriers, and the storage of materials outside designated work areas.

These findings matter because they directly affect both the quality of execution and the safety of surrounding areas where construction is taking place. Poorly maintained sites, missing safety signage, and materials left in unauthorized locations can all contribute to hazards for workers, pedestrians, and motorists alike, particularly in a densely populated urban environment where infrastructure work often takes place alongside active roads and public spaces.

In response to these findings, RIPC emphasized the importance of strengthening compliance with established requirements in order to improve execution quality and maintain safety standards at project sites across the region. The center’s message to contractors and project managers is clear: adherence to safety and cleanliness standards is not optional, but a core component of responsible infrastructure development.

The Bigger Picture

RIPC has framed its ongoing monitoring and reporting efforts as part of a broader strategy to enhance transparency and improve the efficiency of oversight across the city’s infrastructure sector. By systematically tracking permits, incoming reports, and site level compliance issues, the center aims to generate operational indicators that can support more informed decision making at every level of infrastructure planning and execution.

This data driven approach to city management reflects a broader trend seen across Riyadh’s development strategy, one that pairs ambitious construction goals with rigorous monitoring systems designed to catch problems early and hold contractors accountable to established standards. The end goal, according to the center, is not simply the completion of infrastructure projects, but the improvement of infrastructure quality and, by extension, the overall quality of life for residents throughout the Riyadh region.

Looking Ahead

With more than 141,000 permits issued since January and over 190,000 reports processed in the same period, RIPC’s figures paint a picture of a city in the midst of substantial transformation. The scale of activity, spanning road work, active construction projects, and continuous public reporting, suggests that Riyadh’s infrastructure expansion shows little sign of slowing down in the months ahead.

As the center continues to refine its monitoring processes and push for stronger compliance at project sites, the coming months will likely bring further reports detailing both progress and ongoing challenges. For now, the numbers themselves tell a clear story: Riyadh is investing heavily in its infrastructure future, even as it works to ensure that growth does not come at the expense of safety or execution quality.
